Sierra Smiles has long been using laser technology to treat gum disease less invasively and more comfortably than with a scalpel and sutures. Now, Drs. Sierra can treat snoring and sleep apnea, as well as facial lines and wrinkles with two new types of laser treatment: NightLase and SmoothLase.
NightLase uses a gentle laser light treatment to reduce the sound of snoring. The treatment can also be used on sleep apnea patients who cannot comfortably wear an oral device or who do not tolerate a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine.
During NightLase treatment at Sierra Smiles, a laser light gently heats the tissue of your soft palate at the back of your throat. Mild laser heat causes the tissue to tighten. With tightening, there is less vibration of tissue, so the sound of snoring is reduced.
NightLase therapy is repeated three times over the course of a month for optimal results. Each session only takes about twenty minutes and no anesthesia is required. Thus far, patients report little to no discomfort during treatment; some say they only felt a mild “pins and needles” sensation when the laser pulsed. And there are no postoperative restrictions after treatment with NightLase. Research shows that in more than 80 percent of patients, snoring intensity, frequency and duration lessened.
Like NightLase, SmoothLase uses the heat of laser light to treat facial lines and wrinkles. As we age, our skin becomes less firm and more flaccid. As a result, lines and wrinkles are more noticeable. In particular, the area around your mouth is susceptible because of the long-term effects of smiling and frowning.
SmoothLase reduces the appearance of these lines and wrinkles around your mouth with laser treatment. Placed inside your mouth, SmoothLase’s non-ablative (non-melting or vaporizing) laser generates mild heat to tighten surrounding tissue. As this tissue becomes tighter, there is a plumping effect that reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles around your mouth. The result is a smoother and more youthful appearance.
With SmoothLase, you’ll see results after your first treatment, but the most dramatic results will likely require two or three sessions. SmoothLase is FDA-approved and delivers natural-looking results that are long lasting.
